1. What is the difference between a powerchair and an electric wheelchair?
There is no difference between a powerchair, power wheelchair and an electric wheelchair. These are all terms to describe a motorized chair. However, there are many differences in styles of chairs depending on the needs and purposes of use.

2. Is the hand control, also called the joystick, easy to use?
Yes, it may require some time for some users to feel confident but with a little practice, everyone can operate the chair with ease.

3. Can the joystick be mounted on either the left or right armrest?
Most models of powerchairs have a universal receiver on both armrests so the joystick can be placed on either side. On other models you must choose one side or the other at the point of purchase.

4. Can powerchairs go outside?
Yes, all electric wheelchairs can be used outside on pavement. Some models can be used on grass and other types of terrains. Speak to a sales representative for assistance.

5. Is a lap belt required to use a powerchair?
No, a restraint is not required. You can choose what works best for your circumstance.

6. How can I transport a powerchair in my car?
Some powerchairs are designed for easy disassembly into lightweight parts for easy loading and unloading into a vehicle. Other models may require a Mobility Lift to be installed on your vehicle.

7. Do all vehicles support a Mobility Lift for my powerchair?
No. If your vehicle does not support an inside lift or does not support the weight required for an outside hitch receiver lift then you may need a mobility trailer.

8. How long do batteries last on power wheelchairs?
The average battery life is 2 to 3 years for most SLA type batteries and 4 to 5 years for Lithium batteries. Life will vary depending on how they are used, how they are charged, storage temperature and many other variables.

9. What does the measurement for ground clearance mean?
Ground clearance is the distance from the ground to the bottom of the deck of the powerchair. The motor and axle will be lower than this measurement but that is not a usage issue in most cases because both rear wheels raise and lower simultaneously on paths, ramps and thresholds.

10. Which model is best for travel on an airline?
Any of the portable electric wheelchairs at Scooter Direct are compatible for airline travel.  Though it is important that you select a battery size and type that is airline approved such as 12ah to 22ah SLA batteries or 10ah Lithium batteries.  Large Lithium batteries are not airline approved.

11. Why are powerchairs slower than mobility scooters?
Mobility Scooters are able to go faster than powerchairs due to their longer wheelbase. Typically, powerchairs can move a 3.5 or 4 mph which is a very brisk walking pace. This speed will definitely keep you moving with your companions, and may even wear them out.

12. Do the mobility wheelchairs work well on carpet?
Yes, powerchairs have enough power to operate on carpet and many will even work on grass.
